TGA Peptides Review: What the Coroner Recommended

A coroner asked the TGA to review CJC1295 and Ipamorelin and consider further restrictions. What the TGA and the Medical Board have said so far.

Written by the Peptide Labs Research Team

The coroner who examined Richard Norton's death asked the TGA to review the therapeutic benefits and safety risks of peptides such as CJC1295 and Ipamorelin, and to "consider whether further restrictions ought to be imposed on their use". It is a recommendation, not a rule change, and no new restriction had been announced at the time of writing.

What did the TGA say in response?

In a statement after the finding, the TGA said it "continues to warn consumers about the risks of unapproved peptides which have not been assessed by the TGA for safety, quality or effectiveness". It is "continuing to assess the risks associated with these products and considering whether further regulatory or other measures may be appropriate". ABC reports the coroner's findings record the TGA saying "various pathways existed which enabled medical practitioners to access unapproved peptides".

What did the Medical Board decide?

The Medical Board of Australia investigated the prescribing doctor after a notification. An expert report to the board said there is "insufficient evidence that CJC1295/Ipamorelin is safe, effective or beneficial for human use". The board's July decision found the doctor's practice "is or may be unsatisfactory", and the doctor received a caution and conditions.

What happens next?

Any restriction would follow the TGA's usual process and would not take effect through the coroner's report alone. The status of CJC-1295 and ipamorelin is unchanged today. A separate call for a parliamentary inquiry is also under way, and the coroner's finding is the trigger for both.
