Richard Norton Cause of Death: What the Coroner Found

A coroner found Richard Norton died from complications of using unapproved CJC1295 and Ipamorelin. What the finding says and how the TGA responded.

Written by the Peptide Labs Research Team

Coroner David Ryan found that actor Richard Norton, 75, died at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne on 30 March 2025 as a result of complications that arose from his use of the unapproved peptide products CJC1295 and Ipamorelin. The finding was handed down on 28 October 2026. ABC News says it is believed to be the first confirmed death in Australia from unapproved peptide use.

What did the coroner find?

A medical practitioner prescribed both peptides and a licensed compounding pharmacy in Queensland made them up. Mr Norton had signed an informed consent form, and his practitioner had discussed the experimental nature of the treatment. The coroner noted he had been taking more than the amount prescribed. Reports differ on the medical mechanism, so this page repeats only what ABC reported.

What did the coroner ask the TGA to do?

He recommended that the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) review the risks of peptides such as CJC1295 and Ipamorelin and consider further restrictions. A recommendation is not a rule change. Our page on the TGA peptides review covers what happens next.

What has the TGA said?

It "continues to warn consumers about the risks of unapproved peptides which have not been assessed by the TGA for safety, quality or effectiveness". It is "considering whether further regulatory or other measures may be appropriate". For the compounds themselves, see CJC-1295 and ipamorelin in Australia.
