The US HHS draft policy names six peptides: BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c, KPV, Semax and Epitalon. This page sets out what each one is as a molecule and what the policy documents say about the evidence. Our summary of the policy covers the rules.
| Peptide | What it is |
|---|---|
| BPC-157 | Synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide derived from a gastric protein sequence |
| TB-500 | Synthetic 7-amino-acid fragment of thymosin beta-4 (Ac-LKKTETQ) |
| MOTS-c | 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA |
| KPV | Three-amino-acid fragment (Lys-Pro-Val) of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone |
| Semax | Synthetic heptapeptide analogue of an ACTH fragment, with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail |
| Epitalon | Synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) |
TB-500 is not thymosin beta-4 itself. Thymosin beta-4 is a 43-amino-acid protein, and TB-500 is a short fragment of it.
HHS described FDA scientists' concerns about TB-500, Epitalon and Semax as "inferential or mechanistic rather than observed", and for KPV as reflecting "an absence of information". FDA briefing materials called the BPC-157 studies "short, small, and insufficient to establish safety or effectiveness". HHS states the policy is not an FDA approval.
See the research overviews for BPC-157, TB-500 and Semax, and the FDA review of BPC-157, TB-500 and MOTS-c.
